How much shade a pergola provides isn’t a matter of luck. It’s a design decision. The spacing between cross beams and the width of the rafters are the two primary variables: the closer the beams are set and the wider the rafters, the more sun protection the structure delivers. We also factor in placement orientation relative to the direction and volume of sunlight your specific site receives, which matters more in Austin than in most climates.

But cedar isn’t the only option. Depending on your home’s architecture and how much maintenance you want to take on, we can work with pressure-treated wood, low-maintenance vinyl, or structural aluminum. Structural aluminum suits the clean lines of contemporary Austin homes and won’t rust or require seasonal sealing. Low-maintenance vinyl delivers a traditional pergola look with minimal upkeep. Not every yard is the same, and not every pergola should be. We build both wall-mounted pergolas that attach to the house and extend your living space outward, and freestanding pergolas that can define a specific zone in the yard on their own. A freestanding structure works especially well around a pool, a fire pit area, or a dedicated dining space. A wall-mounted design connects the indoor and outdoor areas visually and functionally.
Before we settle on rafter spacing, cover type, or material, our design team works with you to understand how you actually plan to use the space. A pergola intended primarily for shade gets a different treatment than one designed to frame a fire feature or serve as a dining pavilion.
