TimberTech & Composite Decking FAQs: Charlotte's Top Timbertech Deck Installer
What's the difference between TimberTech Advanced PVC and composite?
The main difference comes down to how the boards are made. Both are low-maintenance decking options, but are created from different materials. TimberTech Advanced PVC is entirely wood-free, made from polymers, while TimberTech composite decking is a blend of recycled wood fibers and plastic. Because PVC contains no wood, it offers the ultimate protection against moisture and heat. TimberTech composite mimics the aesthetic feel and look of real wood at a more economical price. These boards are still durable and hold up incredibly to moisture, sun, and wear and tear.
I've heard Composite decking gets hot in the sun. Is that true?
Yes, composite decking tends to get hotter than traditional wood in the sun. We are transparent in the realities of choosing a plastic decking option. As expected, the darker the color, the hotter it gets. The good news is that some lines are designed to stay cooler than others, just like the colors. Talk with your design consultant about how much direct sunlight your deck gets, and we will explore our options that best fit your home and preferences.
What does low-maintenance mean?
Although Low-maintenance isn't zero maintenance, it eliminates the staining, sanding, and sealing that come with a traditional wood deck. Claiming somehting is zero maintenance would never be true when the something lives outdoors. Decking is prone to dirt, water, pollen, and debris. Basic cleaning, wiping down your deck, sweeping off debris, and scrubbing off dirt from pets, is still required with low-maintenance decking.
Is TimberTech double the price of a wood deck?
It's no secret that composite decking has a higher up-front cost than traditional wood. Of course, there are some factors to consider when comparing prices, such as the size of your deck, railing, collections, and special features. Our design consultants will work with you to understand what you're looking to invest in your deck and help steer you in the right direction when choosing which TimberTech collection to choose from.
Can I build a TimberTech deck with wood rails?
Yes! We call this a hybrid rail option. Many clients choose a hybrid rail solution to save money. This allows them to allocate their budget to a larger layout, a premium decking collection, additional features like a pergola or porch, or to spend the budget they were hoping to save.
